Family Renewal Shelter

Showing Support for Domestic Violence Victims in Tacoma, Washington

by Camille Dodson, Editorial Assistant

Stepping up to look out for the health and safety of others that may be unable to reach out for help on their own is paramount for creating a better community. Since 1986, Family Renewal Shelter, based in Tacoma, Washington, has offered resources and necessities for safety to domestic violence victims who are at highest risk. Not only do they provide housing, clothing, and food, but they also help victims with emergency client contact, victim advocacy, transportation from hospitals, and more. They additionally have a national 24-hour crisis line that is staffed to give advice, counsel, and safety/escape planning to anyone in need.

All of these resources are only made possible through the generous donations from individuals, foundations, businesses, service organizations, community groups, and churches that provide volunteers and funding. Recently, the community gathered together to donate something spectacular to Family Renewal Shelter.

The Team from Kitsap Roofing along with representatives from PABCO and Family Renewal Shelter.

The roof for Family Renewal Shelter had exceeded its life expectancy and was showing signs of significant wear. Employees from PABCO® Roofing Products visited the shelter during the holiday season to deliver gifts and noticed water leaking into the building. They reached out to Kitsap Roofing in Gig Harbor, Washington, who were happy to help out with the project.

“The Director of Family Renewal Shelter had buckets on the floor inside of the house collecting rain that was coming through the roof,” said Zac Fain, Owner and Operator of Kitsap Roofing. “There was granule loss, missing shingles, heavy moss growth, and active leaks.”

Kitsap Roofing is a locally rooted roofing company with a history that dates back to 1977. The company was built on values of hard work, integrity, and a strong commitment to the local community. In 2025, ownership transitioned to Megan and Zac Fain, who are continuing that legacy while keeping the same trusted crew in place. The company specializes in standing seam metal roofing and hand-nailed composition roofs, while also offering services such as roof replacements, repairs, new roof construction, roof cleaning, and gutter installation. They were the perfect team for the job of installing an asphalt shingle roof replacement on both the main home and the detached garage of Family Renewal Shelter.

Materials for the project were generously donated by ABC® Supply Co., Pioneer Builders Supply, and PABCO Roofing Products, which helped make the project possible. The roof was replaced using PABCO Premier shingles in Pewter Grey. The underlayment included UDL 30 and PSU30, and the system was ventilated using metal box vents. This roofing system was a great fit for the project because PABCO products are designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the Pacific Northwest, including its cold and wet weather.

“Our team was very grateful for the opportunity to provide this roof for the Family Renewal Shelter, and donating the labor was a small way to give back and support the important work the shelter does for families in the community,” said Fain.

Contributing support to those who need it is a responsibility for those who have the means to help others. That’s why Kitsap Roofing, PABCO Roofing Products, ABC Supply Co., and Pioneer Builders Supply took the initiative to donate supplies and labor to their community. With their help, Family Renewal Shelter now has a resilient new roof that will allow them to continue their amazing work for domestic violence victims for years to come.
