Using Leftover Materials to Create Homes for Our Furry Friends

Community outreach is an important part of the roofing industry that can take many different forms. For some, it means donating roofs to homeowners or public services in need. In the case of McPartlon Roofing in Santa Fe, New Mexico, it’s about looking out for our four-legged, furry friends that could use better homes.
McPartlon Roofing was founded in 1995 by brothers Brian and Kevin McPartlon, who followed in their father’s footsteps to make a name for themselves in the roofing industry. The company has grown to over 40 employees, including three who have remained there for over 30 years. In 2019, Brian McPartlon retired and his daughter, Hillary McPartlon, took over.
Hillary McPartlon is an enthusiastic animal lover and a self-proclaimed crazy dog lady. When she realized how many materials were left over after roofing projects, she came up with a fun new way to recycle with her team: creating doghouses. The doghouses are a great way to encourage team building and give back to the community.
After building the doghouses, McPartlon and her team will take them to roofing events and trade shows as raffle items. All of the proceeds from these raffles are donated to local Santa Fe dog and feral cat rescues. In July, they additionally donated recycled building materials to pet owners to repair pre-existing doghouses. While it is too hot in the New Mexico summer heat for dogs to be outside all the time, the summer is the perfect opportunity to ensure that doghouses are insulated and waterproofed for fall and winter weather.
“Our entire team is always incredibly excited to get involved, taking immense pride in crafting each of these special homes,” said McPartlon. “Our crew channeled their creativity and teamwork into designing and building unique doghouses using leftover, high-quality roofing materials that would otherwise go to waste. By reusing and recycling these scraps, we keep valuable materials out of landfills.”
McPartlon has also offered to create custom doghouses alongside her team for any locals that are interested, including replicas of homes or designs suitable for different sizes and breeds of dogs. Any proceeds that come from making and selling these replicas are likewise donated to local animal organizations.
What started simply as doghouses has expanded into cat shelters, bird feeders, and other structures. Recently, McPartlon Roofing was voted Best Roofing Company in 2026 by the Santa Fe Reporter, a prominent local newspaper, which only highlights their positive impact on the Santa Fe community. Supporting your community can take on many forms, but McPartlon’s approach models an interesting way to both repurpose unused materials and to make something useful for pet owners.
