The Western States Roofing Contractors Association (WSRCA) hosted its Virtual Western Roofing Expo July 1-15, 2020. For those that registered, the party continues through the end of 2020, as all the seminars are available until December. Despite being moved online due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the roofing industry’s premier trade show was an impressive digital destination for those looking to learn about new products and engage in educational webinars. It was a major endeavor for the WSRCA to move its massive trade show to an online format, but it was executed in such an organized and creative way that the attendees and exhibitors were able to benefit from the Virtual Western Roofing Expo in much the same way as years prior.
One of the most dynamic features of the Virtual Western Roofing Expo was the sheer number of exciting and informative webinars that were available for attendees. On July 1, 2020, WSRCA president Leo Ibarra hosted the Virtual Western Roofing Expo opening session, which included: wrangler of the year, Mike Trotter, Front Range Roofing Systems, LLC, Greeley, Colorado; board member of the year, Wendy Marvin, Matrix Roofing and Home Solutions, Vancouver, Washington; and outstanding service award, Trent Cotney, Cotney Construction Law, Tampa, Florida.
This year’s webinars were a well-rounded offering of topics, including industry issues, construction law, marketing, legislative updates, code changes, installation procedures, product specifications, and much more. Specific webinars included: Surviving Uncertain Times; Top Five Employment Issues in Roofing; Speed, Quality, and Versatility with Polyglass’ Self-Adhered Modified Bitumen Roofing Systems; Construction Contract Provisions; Issues Currently Affecting the Roofing and Waterproofing Industry; A View From the Hill: 2020 Legislative Update; Leveraging Partnerships with Manufacturers to Benefit Roofing Projects and to Reduce Your Liability; A Retrospective Review of Code Changes from 2000-2018/21; Put it in Writing! Essential Policies for Every Employee Handbook; Performance Analysis of Aged TPO Membranes; How to use Roofgraf to get Accurate Measurements and Close More Jobs; Retrofit Single-Ply Roofs Installed Over Existing Metal Roofs: Wind Uplift and Industry Concerns; Simplifying OSHA Requirements for Rooftop Fall Protection; Significant Changes Between the 2015 and 2018 IBC and IRC Affecting Roof Assemblies; PV Mounting in Asphalt and Metal Roofs: Code and Best Practices with Roof Tech’s Self-Flashing Mounting Systems; Prepare Your Low-Slope Roofing Projects to Meet the 2021 ICC Codes; How to Get Women on the Roof: Successful Strategies and Case Studies; Winning with Documentation and Communication; Siplast Liquid-Applied Flashing: Paraflex and Parapro; The Top Ten Employment Law Mistakes Most Commonly Made by Roofing Contractors, and How to Avoid Them; Proactively Address Moisture in Roof Assemblies; Avoiding Legal Pitfalls When Scaling Your Company; To Bid, or Not to Bid: That is the Question; OSHA Inspection and Citation Process; Three Roof Projects Gone Wrong; Business Succession Planning in Construction: An Essential Tool in Your Toolbox; Roofing, Labor Shortage, and Embracing Diversity, Technology, and the Next Generation; High Wind Uplift Requirements for Tile Roofing: What’s New for 2019 I-Codes and ASCE 7-16?; and How to Attract and Retain Young Professionals to Your Business.
The WSRCA’s favorite Washington insider, Craig Brightup of The Brightup Group LLC, gave a particularly informative online presentation on the legislative, regulatory, and political updates that are affecting the roofing industry. He gave details on current COVID-19 legislation, COVID-related tax breaks, upcoming COVID-19 bills, a 2020 election outlook, and other legislative and regulatory items.
For those that need more time to watch all of them, or would like to refresh their memory, the seminars will continue to be available on-demand until the end of 2020.
Davis Memorial Foundation
The WSRCA hosted a Virtual Silent Auction from July 1-15, 2020, in which people were able to bid on a variety of amazing auction items. From autographed sports memorabilia to luxury jewelry to the industry’s most coveted roofing tools, the Virtual Silent Auction was an exciting opportunity for everyone who was involved. The WSRCA even created its own app for the Virtual Silent Auction, which was sponsored by GAF, making it easy for roofing professionals to review, bid, and keep track of coveted items. The big-ticket items included an Oregon fishing trip, donated by Malarkey Roofing Products; a trip for two New York, donated by Beacon Roofing Supply; and a Rhinobond® Induction Welding Tool, donated by OMG® Roofing Products.
The Davis Memorial Foundation celebrated another astounding year of fundraising and was able to award a total of five $5,000 scholarships. Four of these were named scholarships that were donated directly by: Blue’s Roofing, Milpitas, California; Cotney Construction Law, Jacksonville, Florida; Star Roofing, Phoenix, Arizona; and Waterproofing Associates, Mountain View, California. The deserving recipients are: Tyler Kleinsasser, Huron, South Dakota, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, given by Waterproofing Associates; Camille Dodson, Reno, Nevada, University of Nevada, Reno, given by Cotney Construction Law; Kenzie Bloom, Mill Creek, Washington, San Diego State University, given by Blue’s Roofing; Chandler Wiggins, Lawrence, Kansas, University of Kansas, given by the Davis Memorial Foundation; and Grace Gladstone, Gig Harbor, Washington, Gonzaga University, given by Star Roofing.
The Scholarship Award Ceremony took place on July 2, 2020, online. Since its inception in 1997, the Davis Memorial Foundation has awarded more than 125 scholarships for over $525,000. This year’s Virtual Silent Auction helped raise funds for the scholarships.
Attendees were invited to virtually browse the trade show, using an interactive online map. Roofing professionals moved from booth to booth as they watched demonstrations of products and installation procedures from some of the leading industry manufacturers, distributers, and suppliers of roof-related products, materials, equipment, and services, many only available in the Western market.
The annual Membership Meeting also had to be held online, and some adjustments were made. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the previous year’s officers agreed to serve in their current positions for an additional year, including president Leo Ibarra and senior vice president Rob Winkle. This motion was voted upon and passed unanimously.
