Western Roofing Expo 2007
Thousands Expected for 33rd Annual WSRCA Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada
by Marc Dodson, editor
ItÕs almost here! The biggest regional roofing convention is just around the corner and roofing professionals from throughout the West are making plans to attend. Thousands of roofing professions are expected to converge at the Paris Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, June 3-6, 2007, as the Western States Roofing Contractors Association (WSRCA) holds its 33rd annual convention and tradeshow appropriately titled, Western Roofing Expo 2007.
Tradeshow
The Paris convention center will be the site of the WSRCAÕs annual tradeshow. Booth space for the Western Roofing Expo 2007 has been sold-out for several months. More than 175 manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers of roof-related products, materials, equipment, and services are expected to be on hand displaying the newest products available in the Western roofing market.
During the tradeshow hours, attendees will have the opportunity to take part in demonstrations, giveaways, and refreshments from the various exhibit booths. They will also have the opportunity to purchase a tax-deductible raffle ticket supporting the educational foundation of WSRCA, the Davis Memorial Foundation. This years' raffle Grand Prize will be 2007 BMW 328i Sports sedan or $25,000 cash.
Seminar Titles
This year the seminars presented by the WSRCA are geared to address problems and concerns of almost any roofing contractor in the West and include: Insurance Nightmares; Who, What, and Why is Western States RCA ÒTheÓ Association to support in the Western Region; Low-Slope Roof Design; The Art of Handcrafting Slate; The Principles of a Successful Waterproofing Project; Tile Roof InstituteÕs Installer Certification Program; What the Heck is a ÒGreen RoofÓ Anyway?; TPO 5-Year Updates: TPOÕs Five Years and Beyond; and Roofing Litigation Case Studies.
The Spouse Program, Learn To Be A High Roller (or learn just to have more fun!) is designed to make even the novice feel welcome at a gaming table. The instructors will teach the fundamentals of casino gaming. Everyone will get Òfun moneyÓ to play with and the one with the most money at the end of the program will win a prize.
Annual Luncheon with Frank Abagnale
This yearÕs annual luncheon will feature Frank W. Abagnale, one of the world's most respected authorities on the subjects of forgery, embezzlement, and secure documents. For over 30 years he has lectured to and consulted with hundreds of financial institutions, corporations, and government agencies around the world. His rare blend of knowledge and expertise began as a teenager. More than 40 years ago he was known as one of the world's most famous con men as depicted in his best-selling book and popular movie, Catch Me if You Can.
Abagnale cashed $2.5 million in fraudulent checks in every state and 26 foreign countries over a five-year period. Between the ages of 16 and 21, he successfully posed as an airline pilot, an attorney, a college professor, and a pediatrician. Apprehended by the French police when he was 21 years old, Abagnale served time in the French, Swedish, and U.S. prison systems. This remarkable speaker will recount his off-the-wall life story. The former con artist now offers seminars and consulting in the areas of forgery, embezzlement, and secure documents.
Roof Consultants Institute
On June 6, RCI Region IV will present their program designed specifically for consultants and contractors. The seminars will attempt to bring a greater understanding to the successful completion of a roofing and/or waterproofing project. Seminars this year include: Retrofitting with Lightweight Concrete; Factory Mutual Update; Studies & Testing: Composition Shingle, wind Resistance & Seal Tab Technology; Best practices for Design, Installation & Maintenance for Green Roofing; and Use of Panelized Wood Decks & Radiant Barriers.
Davis Foundation Tournaments
On Sunday, June 3, the Davis Memorial Foundation, the WSRCAÕs charitable scholarship arm, will host two fundraising sports tournaments. The Golf Tournament will be played at the Revere Golf Club. The Revere presents a blend of beauty and challenge unlike any other in Southern Nevada. Draped through the rugged desert canyons and valleys of the Las Vegas foothills, the Revere Golf Club offers unending, awe-inspiring views of the city below and mountains beyond. The Mulligan Raffle this year will include a new set of Nike Slingshot Irons as well as other fun prizes. All Golf Tournament participants will receive practice balls, golf cart usage, breakfast, and lunch.
Held concurrently, the Sporting Clays Tournament will be staged at the Desert Lake Country Club in the austere beauty of El Dorado Valley, between the El Dorado Mountains and Henderson. This facility is a private club with a beautiful 5,000-square-foot lodge with a full circle veranda allowing for 360¡ views. This will be a challenging course, as the rabbit and bird trajectories can make this difficult for even the most experienced shooter. Winners of each flight competition and the Poker Run will win a brand new shotgun as well as other fun participation prizes. Be sure to join the Sporting Clays Tournament this year and support the future of the roofing industry. All Sporting Clays Tournament participants will receive shotgun shells, golf cart usage, breakfast, and lunch.
Other Activities
On June 3, WSRCA President Charlie Frost will welcome attendees to the WSRCA's 33rd Annual Convention by staging the Presidential Reception. Those in attendance will enjoy food, beverages, and entertainment. This reception has become the "meeting place of new and old friends," and a great way to start off the convention. The ÒLively-Silent AuctionÓ will be held at the same time, benefiting the Davis Memorial Foundation scholarship program.
On June 4, the Legislative Luncheon will bring attendees up-to-date on what is happening with regard to regulatory agencies that will affect the Western roofing industry. Immediately following the luncheon will be the Annual Awards, the WSRCA nominating report, retiring directors ceremony, and the presentation of the Davis Memorial Foundation Scholarship Awards.
