New Metal Roof Adds Sustainability to Snow Removal Facility

Airport Soars into LEED Gold Certification in Spokane, Washington

A new snow removal facility at the Spokane International Airport in Spokane, Washington is the first equipment and maintenance building to receive LEED® Gold certification in the state of Washington, thanks in large part to its sleek and sustainable metal roof and wall panels. The roof, designed to mirror the mountainous region that surrounds the airport, has ridges and slopes that fit in with the Cascades to the west and the Rockies to the east. The aesthetic is more than that of a typical storage and maintenance facility; it is sleek with clean lines, and the wave-like roof looks like a ribbon waving in the wind. Adding to the aesthetics of the building, the function of the 50,800 sq.ft. snow removal equipment building serves to house new equipment, provide organization, and be a safe center for all crucial winter operations. The new building includes nine equipment bays, a five-ton bridge crane, and a washing station for eight new 75′ long snow removal trucks.

The design team had four goals in mind when designing the facility: meet current FAA airfield snow and ice clearance requirements; provide storage and maintenance space for new snow removal equipment; achieve LEED certification; and use products that will withstand the Spokane weather conditions for several decades. To achieve these goals, the team chose to use metal roof and wall panels from Metal Sales(TM). Metal Sales Manufacturing Corporation provided more than 81,000 sq.ft. of metal roof and wall panels for the snow removal equipment building at the Spokane International Airport. All Metal Sales panels have a long life span of 50 years or more, are 100% recyclable, and contain a high percentage of recycled material contributing to sustainable building goals, such as LEED. In addition, all panel colors from Metal Sales are ENERGY STAR® listed and can improve the energy efficiency of a building.

“The snow removal equipment facility required products that are sustainable, aesthetically appealing, durable, and have a long lifecycle,” says Jim Cortner, principal at Cortner Architectural Company. “We’ve worked with Metal Sales on past projects and know they offer wall and roof panels that fulfill these requirements.” The project features more than 56,000 sq.ft. of Metal Sales’ 16″ Magna-Loc standing seam roof panels with striations in a dark bronze finish. As a structural flat pan standing seam roof panel with thick-gauge substrate, Magna-Loc delivers a clean, linear elegance paired with unmatched quality for a dependable, long-lasting, and beautiful roof.

Not only does Magna-Loc benefit the building in the long run, but it also allows for seamless installation due to its ability to be installed directly onto open purlins serving as a work platform for the installation crew. In addition, Magna-Loc’s concealed clips allow for thermal movement and efficiency. Structural standing seam roof systems are also ideal for long-spanning roofs where extreme temperature variations exist. Magna-Loc offers high wind, fire, and impact resistance.

The remaining 18,400 sq.ft. of Metal Sales materials come from its IC72 wall panels in slate grey and khaki, and 6,300 sq.ft. of its Soffit Panels in dark bronze. The panel colors paired with the sloped roof balance nicely with Washington’s geography.
